It’s been a busy few months, to which I hadn’t realized it’s already April! This year has already started out great for me. I have published two more titles and will have two more books coming out this summer. Crossing my fingers that I will have two more coming out in the Fall.

The year before last, I had set some goals for myself; publish 6 titles a year, for 5 years. That includes short stories, novellas, and novels. Partially, it’s for tax purposes, but mostly, it was set as a challenge. Could I do it? Could I actually write that many books in a year? Well, it turns out, I can. or, rather, I’m getting there.

Last year started out a bit rough. However, I had switched jobs and am now happier where I am. Not only do I get paid more at my present job, but I have more time to spend with my daughter and more time to write.

Last year, I published a novel, a novella, and a short story. I had also written two more novellas, Claimed by the Alpha and Rancher’s Daughter. However, I wasn’t able to publish them until this year.

I also decided to work on lengthening The Mummy’s Curse, a short novella I had published last year. A few people told me that it was a really great story, very hot, but it was also a bit too short. I was told that it had promise had I made it longer. I listened. Not only did I lengthen it, but I am also working on making it a 3 book mini-series and plan to have the next two books in the mini-series published this Fall.

Things are looking up for me as an author, finally, and I couldn’t be more happier!

Preptober

It’s the first of October. For some, it’s simply that, another day in yet another month. But, for some, it’s the first day of Preptober – better known as the first day to begin preparing yourself for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month – the month of November) to begin next month.

This will be my first year to participate in NaNoWriMo. College, mom duties, and life kept me extremely busy that I did not have the time to write as much on a daily basis, which is part of the challenge for NaNoWriMo. Now that I’ve graduated college, I have some time that I could use to actually write.

Today, I begin preparations on book two in my young adult fantasy fiction series. I know this time, it won’t take me 5 1/2 years to finish the first draft, another year before redoing the tense, then many more months revising, writing, and editing.

It’s a wonder I hadn’t driven my editor nuts these past few years. I mean, I had changed the manuscript from present tense, to past tense. Crazy, right? It seems to work though and in doing so, I had added almost twelve thousand more words.

Now my manuscript is finally finished and will be published very, very soon … can’t tell you exactly when … yet … but very soon.

Now that it is out of the way, I can begin book two and am using NaNoWriMo as a way to challenge myself into getting the first draft done a lot sooner than it had taken me on the first book.

For those of you are don’t know what NaNoWriMo is exactly, it’s where writers challenge themselves to write a novel within a month. The minimum word count is 50,000. However, some people exceed that amount and some people aren’t able to finish. The plan is to write at least 1,667 words a day in order to come up with 50,000 words in a month. I plan on writing as many words, but I am not going to stop there. Some are lucky enough to be picked up by a publishing company. Some find a literary agent. Some going on to self-publish.

Book Reviews on Amazon Actually Help

It’s a hard life/job being a small time published author, especially when you first start out. You continue to market yourself time and time again, in hopes of getting your work out there. My first year as a published author went really well. I had quite a few book signing events, which led to being invited to other events where I was able to set up a table for more book signings. I’ve sold quite a few books by myself alone; through social media, emails, word of mouth, leaving postcards here and there. But that’s just small marketing. it takes a lot more effort, time, and money to really get noticed.

Recently, I’ve been doing some research on how to boost sales, broaden my marketing area, and strengthen my marketing skills. A very good friend of mine can tell you straight away, that I’m not very good with computers, yet I try and I am a quick learner.

Social media alone is the largest self-marketing tool that I know of, but word of mouth from readers can be a much bigger step in having your work noticed.

According to Brooke Warner in her Huffington Post blog post, “book reviews on Amazon are what carries it’s weight in getting more attention with Amazon.”

“After you hit 50 (ratings), you get more visibility on Amazon.”

In this line of work, I believe reviews from readers are extremely important. It helps me, the author, know that my work is being purchased, that my work is being seen by others. It also lets me know what people actually think of what I have written. It also lets me know that my work is getting out there.

It takes a lot of time and and a lot effort to put a book together and get it out on the market, yet it takes little effort to write up a review.

If you read a book and truly love it, be sure to let the author know. There’s many webpages out there where their work is being sold. Be kind and leave a quick review. I’m a big Goodreads user and love to rate author’s books. I also click which ones I’ve read, want to read, and have purchased. I then write up a short review on what I thought of each book I’ve read. And if I loved a particular book, I let them know.

I’ve even written reviews on books and posted them here on my blog, tagging their name and a link to where you can purchase that book or see other works by that author. This all helps us authors in many ways. It gets our name out there. Word of mouth goes a long way, it is a small part of marketing, and it does help the author. You never know when someone is actually reading that review; it helps make that decision for them to purchase that book.

According to a blog entry by Mike Briggs, on author Patricia Briggs’ writing, “…that pure, dumb luck plays a major role in this phase of the game.”

He’s right. Just by posting on my blog here, I’ve been able to bring attention to my work and what I do. I’ve had guess blog spots where I talked about what I do and how I got started and why. Other author’s, whom I have reviewed and shared their work here on my blog, have seen my posts and have thanked me.

Small steps can lead to big adventures, yet you have to take those small steps.

Book Review on The Darkest Minds

Title of the book: The Darkest Minds

Genre: Fiction

I tend to write reviews on books that I love and can’t put down. To me, it’s a way of spreading the word and letting others that are in search of another good book, to look for this one the next time they’re in the book store or library.

I found this book at the library about a week ago. I loved it to the point that I found it hard to put down. It’s one of those ‘stay up late reading, because it’s that good’ type of book. It’s set in the modern day, in America. A certain disease has hit all of the children to the point that they either die or they inherit psi powers. The stronger their powers, the more danger they’re in with the adults, mostly the government. They receive a number and are categorized by color depending on their strength and level of power; Green being very low, Blue, Yellow, Orange, and finally the worse being Red.

They are gathered up and taken to these camps to be monitored. There are a few camps spread out across the US. Some of the kids have escaped these camps in search of a person called the ‘Slip Kid’. The main character, Ruby, nicknamed Green by a small group of her friends, is one of the children that has managed to escape her camp and is in search of the Slip Kid.

Along the way her and three of her friends escape bounty hunters, called Skip Tracers, and also escape the PSF’s, which are the newly formed Army of Psi Enforcers. The PSF’s are in charge of the encampments. They also roam the streets in search of escapees to bring back to the camps. They also escape and Anti Psi Group, called The Children’s League. The Children’s League is in search of children that have very powerful psi powers; Ruby just so happens to be one of these children, she just doesn’t know it…yet.  

This book is packed full of adventure, action, and a little bit of teen romance. It also leaves you wanting more. I would definitely read this one again, but first I’m going to pick up the next one in the series, Never Fade.

Books about Vampires and Dragons

I love books, I love to read. I spend quite a bit of time at the library. Most of the time I walk out with a stack of books knowing I don’t have time to read them all. When I browse, it’s usually the cover or the spine that catches my eye. I love art, so it’s whatever jumps out at me, will grab my attention. I rarely look at the author, unless it’s one of my favorite authors and I’m specifically looking for. I love new, first time authors.

First I read the back, if there’s a synopsis written, telling me what the story is about, if not I will open the book to the inside jacket cover and read the synopsis there. Sometimes I will read the first page; if the story grabs my attention enough to make me turn the page, i’ll check the book out.

I read all kinds of genre’s, mostly Fantasy; that’s usually what I write. I’m not a huge fan of romance novels. You would normally find me in the Young Adult section, I find a lot of good books there. I had checked one out not too long ago that I would recommend to anyone who reads Fantasy or Fiction. It’s called Firelight by Sophie Jordan. It was an interesting read and hard to put down. I found it unique, something I haven’t read about before.

Since Twilight, everyone has been overdoing the Vampire scene. I’ve seen a lot of Faery books and a few Werewolf books, but Sophie Jordan’s book, I believe might be a first. I could be wrong on this and would love for someone to correct me (kindly though), but her book is about dragons that have learned to evolved into humans, calling themselves draki. They can manifest (shape shift) themselves back into dragon form and back into human form.

She has a second book of her, four book draki series, called Vanish. My name has been added to a list at the library to check it out. I hope you will check it out too.

Another Fantasy, Mystery, Fiction book that I really loved, I found in the Adult section, is a Vampire series by Chris Farnsworth. I started with the second book, Blood Oath. It’s about a vampire that protects the President of the United States through a blood oath. I thought after ten pages I would put it down and not pick it up again; this is before I started reading it, I was wrong. It was actually a really good book. Written really well. I finished the book within a few days and am now on the third book called Red, White, and Blood.

Both of these books are newer books, so they should be in your local bookstore or library. Check them out.
