Cold and Flu Season is Still Here

The joys of surviving the cold and flu season. Will I get sick? Do I need the flu shot? When is the best time for the flu shot? What are the flu symptoms again? Wait, my co-worker sounds like they might have the flu!

This year, the flu bug has been around, if not some sort of nasty virus or two. Luckily, we’ve dodged the flu bug, three times this season. Unluckily, my daughter has caught two viruses.

A while back I had posted about  Alka Seltzer vs Nyquil. I have only had the flu once and wouldn’t want to wish it on anyone. Maybe is was also due to having strep throat on top of the flu. Yes, I tested positive for both nastiness.

Ever since then, I have been trying to maintain a health lifestyle by eating healthier, exercising more. Being a single mom, and an autism mom at that, I tend to stay quite busy. My healthy eating habits are a hit and miss; depends on how full my schedule is. But, I do tend to meet my daily step quota, if not I overachieve it.

At times, it gets hard to keep up with everything when keeping a very busy schedule. Some things I’ve learned when it’s this time of year is to up my Vitamin-C intake, especially if I have to be surrounded by people who seemed to have a cold, and you pray it isn’t the flu and drink plenty of water … not too much.

I take Airborne if I know the flu bug is in the office or if I start to feel a bit sluggish, as if I am coming down with something myself, I take Emergen-C. They both come in different flavors.

Alka Selzer Cold still helps out, much better than Nyquil, lol! And I’ve learned to stock up on all of this stuff, as a just in case scenario, especially this year as bad as the flu has been.

Stock up on the Lysol and hand sanitizer and Kleenex, too!

Good-bye, Flu!

I’m not a fan of head colds. I don’t think anyone is. I’m especially not fond of the flu either. I’m particularly not a fan of any kind of sickness that my daughter gets. Even though my daughter and I got our flu shots, we weren’t protected against the strand that was going around after the flu shot mixture was sent out to the medical facilities. At first I was the one that had caught the flu. I thought it was just a normal cold – stuffiness and congestion, but I also had the chills to go along with it. I went to the VA in hopes of getting some nasal decongestant. Yet after running through my reasons for being there the nurse decided to swab my throat and nose for the flu, as a precaution. Then I had to dawn a lovely mask that had everyone staring at me as if I grew a third eye.

I didn’t have time to sit and wait for the results, so I decided to pick up my mini me and head home. For those that aren’t familiar with how the VA runs, a trip to the ER or making a doctor’s appointment is an all day adventure, without the fun of course. I didn’t step two feet in the door before the phone began ringing – test results are back, I have the flu.

Now to get my dad to pick up the meds for me as I wasn’t up to driving back to Little Rock…I started feeling a little more worse-for-wear, though I didn’t start the day feeling that great to begin with.

What’s worse is that if I had a sniffle of any kind, I couldn’t go into work. But I didn’t just have a sniffle, I had the flu. Quite upsetting as I love my job, working with the large primates at the zoo. Plus, I had to miss my classes, which was going to put me behind, especially if I miss lectures. After a week of feeling the utmost crappiest I’ve ever felt, my daughter comes down with the flu. After a phone call to her doctor, a trip to the ER, and several days in bed, she’s finally feeling much better.

With all that said, I’m playing catch up with schoolwork, all the while praying my grams doesn’t get the flu next.

With Autumn Comes…

It’s already the end of the month, well, not the last day of September, but almost. I love Autumn. I love the beautiful colors in the trees. I love the cooler weather. I love football. I love wearing scarves and long sleeve shirts. But what I don’t love about the change in weather and this time of year is that everyone is passing some sort of cold or flu around.

Yesterday I took my daughter to the doctor. She had gotten up in the middle of the night throwing up. First thing I checked was if she had a fever…she didn’t. With a quick change of bed sheets and her clothes we went back to bed. There were a few close calls (almost throw up) that morning, but she insisted on going to school…seriously, I was going to let her stay home, but she threw a fit, wanting to go to school.

Upon dropping her off I told them that if she gets sick to call me, that I had to go to class, but I will pick her up in a few hours. Once we got to the doctor’s office she started throwing up. I truly feel bad when she feels bad. I calmly rub her back, hold her hair, then tell her everything is going to be okay. What I love about my little girl, is that no matter how ill she’s feeling, she always continues to keep a smiling face and keeps acting her silly self. I know she gets that from me.

Turns out she only has fluid built up in one ear and looks to be a minor ear infection…I caught it early. The fluid drainage just causes her to throw up. I am just thankful she doesn’t have the flu or something worse, though what can be worse than having the flu?

I hope everyone is doing well and stirs clear of whatever bug is going around. I’m trying my best to stay away from those around me with the sniffles. There had been a few people already leaving class early because they didn’t feel too well, nor did they look it. Lots of fluids, rest, and healthy eating.

Spring Ache

I was actually hoping to get more writing done this week, as it was after all my Spring Break. But Thursday morning I woke up with a bad head ache and my whole body just…ached, all over. I thought the cold weather was bothering me, as it was snowing a few counties north of me. Later that evening it was finally determined that I had the flu! Yuck! Today, Sunday, I am finally recovering from the last three days of being bed bound.

The thing about recovering from the flu, you think you’re hungry, but you’re actually not. And nothing tastes right or the way it should. And you would prefer to spend this day being lazy or just stare off into space, contemplating on the thought of being lazy today.

I and a few others think that the ground hog Phil lied, or someone in the media did somewhere. Phil must’ve seen his shadow, I’m sure of it. How else do you explain the snow and ice and cold weather we’re still having, after being told that winter was finally over and that spring is finally here? No matter, I’m just really, really ready for shorts and sandal weather!

School resumes for me tomorrow. I will have eight weeks left until summer break. I pray that I don’t catch another cold or come down with the flu again as I have plans for the end of June.

My step-dad’s side of the family is having their first family reunion…why they’re finally having a reunion is unbeknownst to me, but we are glad they are. After the reunion we’re planning on touring Philadelphia and its history, as well as the surrounding states. After doing some research online to see which places I would love to visit, I found out that Edgar Allan Poe has a house in Philadelphia. Now I’m really anxious to go! Though I’m a huge fan of History, I’m a bigger fan of the classic writer’s.

Hope everyone else is having a good day!

Alka Seltzer is much better than Nyquil

This weekend both, my daughter and I were really sick with head colds. My head felt like it was going to explode from the headache and sinus pressure I was having, then every bit of my body ached. yesterday morning I went to the store and picked up some Alka Seltzer for colds. As soon as I got home I took the Alka Seltzer and both my daughter and I slept the rest of the day. It didn’t leave me feeling groggy the following day like Nyquil does.

I did get up for a few minutes to work on a little homework, then went back to bed. Little miss didn’t get up until early AM, but went back to bed. I’m feeling much better this morning, the sinus pressure, headache, and body aches are now gone…Thank goodness! Little miss still has a slight cough, but not as bad as it was this weekend. Both, she and I went on to school today. Definitely recommend taking any of the Alka Seltzer cold meds.

We are still due to get some more cold weather, even after having a nice warm weekend. Wishing everyone well and stay warm!

No more NyQuil for me

The change of weather also brings colds and possibly the flu. I’ve actually had the flu once in my life…thank goodness. If you’ve ever had it, you wish to never get it again. Everyone around me had started showing signs of head colds. Their constant coughing and sneezing and wiping their noses with tissues. I myself had skipped the sneezing, stuffiness, runny nose, and went straight to coughing. I didn’t have any warnings of an oncoming cold. I had coughed so much for two days that my back was hurting. When I got home I immediately laid on a heating pad. My throat felt like I took a wire brush to it.

Normally I drink tea or take vitamins or try whatever I can, med free, to get rid of my cold. The reason why I choose med free is that most cold meds that I need to take has acetaminophen in them. Well, I cannot take anything with acetaminophen in them as I take two different prescribe medications for migraines.

Last night I chose to skip my migraine meds and took a cold medicine. I needed relief and fast. I wanted to stop coughing. I went through half a bag of cough drops within a whole day. Sadly those cough drops didn’t find me any relief. So, last night I took NyQuil. I still woke up coughing during the middle of the night. I also woke up feel so drowsy from the after effects, that all I wanted to do was go back to bed and sleep the day away.

I was lucky to not have class today, though that didn’t mean I wouldn’t have homework; there’s always homework to do when you’re in college. I dropped my daughter off at daycare and came back home, only to stare at the computer screen. I found myself crawling back into bed for a few more hours of sleep.

It’s three in the afternoon and I’m still feeling the drowsy effects. It wasn’t like a drank a bottle of NyQuil because it was in pill form. It said to take two pills…this was around 8 o’clock last night when I took them. All I can think right now is ‘thank goodness it’s Friday!’ and I can catch up with the rest of my homework tomorrow.
