I’m to write an essay on an author who writes short stories or poems from the 1950’s to present time in my creative writing class. I only read novels or am a fan of the classics such as Poe, Frost, Whitman, Dickenson, etc…which cannot be used because they are before 1950.ย
This is where your help comes in…if you know of a good book about short stories or poems that I should check out, please leave a comment below. I appreciate all the help that I get.
Hey Jenn. Depending on how they define short story for the purpose of your essay, how about Roald Dahl? Surely one of the most popular and most well known childrens authors around ๐
You’re the second person to recommend Dahl. I’ll def look them up. Thank you!! ๐
Ray Bradbury, I think. Although some of his started in the 1940s there are some that ended up in the 1950s. I think, “I Sing: The Body Electric” is a collection of them. This site will tell you which, but he published short stories all the way up to 1980. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stories_of_Ray_Bradbury I always enjoy reading his short stories. Yes, Fahrenheit 451 is brilliant, but there’s so much more to him. Roald Dahl wrote some short stories in that time frame. I haven’t read Margaret Atwood, but I think she could count.
As for poetry, I don’t read as much as I should. Anyway, hopefully this helps.
Oh thank you! I’ve heard of Bradbury I think. I’ll check it out! Appreciate the help as always!! ๐
My suggestion? Google up “short stories or poems” published in (_____ add a year) and go from there! ๐
Thank you! Never really thought of that, but I’ll give that a try. ๐
